The Scottish Score Championships were hosted by Inverness Orienteering Club at Anagach on the outskirts of Grantown on Sunday 10^th September. 

Anagach is a mature and mostly runnable (depending on the length of your legs!) coniferous forest with heather underfoot, intricate contour detail on fluvio-glacial ridges, a good path network and sizeable crossable marshes.  105 competitors took part on a very warm day.

This year’s Scottish Night Championships gave everyone the opportunity to practise their headtorch orienteering skills prior to the British Night Championships this weekend. East Lothian Orienteers kindly hosted the event at Balgone Estate, just south of North Berwick.

Entries for the 28 June JOK Chasing Sprint at Callendar Park – which will be broadcast live on BBC TV – close on Thursday 13 June – so orienteers are encouraged to enter online now!

There are several junior competitions held in Scotland each year, as well as competitions around the UK which Scottish junior teams take part in.

There was lots of orienteering action this weekend, with another terrific victory for Scotland at the Junior Inter Regional Orienteering Championships in rainy Sheffield – see separate report.

This weekend the Scottish Sprint Championships were hosted by Tayside Orienteers in MacRosty Park in Crieff. In a fun variation on the normal sprint style saw best use of the parkland and surrounding woods or streets with competitors taking part in two ultrasprints which were then combined to calculate the winning times.

It was perhaps not quite what James MacRosty thought the park would be used for when he donated part of it to the people of Crieff in 1908 but the format seemed to make people smile and even the weather approved!

Orienteering will enjoy live television coverage this summer as the JOK Chasing Sprint – which takes place at Callendar Park, Falkirk, on Friday 28 June – will be shown on TV and online, via the new BBC Scotland TV channel.

Having picked the Jedburgh Race the Abbeys event as the June portion of the Inter-club Championship, we were not expecting Roxburgh Reivers to have organised the weather as well. It was a great weekend of fabulous weather, glorious backdrops to the orienteering round Kelso and Jedburgh and the planners had provided us with some amazing courses which tested how well the brain reacted when an orienteering challenge was combined with the warmth of summer.

The SOUL series restarts after its summer hiatus, with the next events in Perth and Elgin later in September.  Entries are open for both.

The headline news is that we’re now back to thirteen events in the series.  Having lost one event early one due to ‘permissions’, a replacement for it has been recently added.  Accordingly, the series will revert to being being the best seven scores for all senior classes. although the junior classes will remain best six scores.
