Looking back to our fabulous volunteers we had to mention all those involved in staging the 2024 Sprint World Championships (WOC) in Edinburgh last summer. Thousands of hours of volunteering made the vent not only a huge success but also possible! Thank you to everyone involved but special mention to a few – Lindsey Knox (Roxburgh Reivers) who organised the successful WOC Tour event, Lorna Eades (Interlopers) for all her organisational skills in making sure the broadcast/ media was possible and worked at WOC, Jonathon and Rona Molloy (Forth Valley Orienteers) for running the WOC Office and managing the athlete experience and Mark Stodgell (Quantock Orienteers/ Walton Chasers) for his work as IT Director.
The 2025 Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival brought together over 350 pupils from across the country for a day of activity, adventure, and fun. This year, we invited schools to share their own reflections on the event — from training and preparation to the experience on the day itself. Read on to hear from two schools who took part.
On Thursday June 5, Pittencrieff Park in Dunfermline welcomed pupils from all across Scotland, hosting the much-anticipated Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival. This year’s event was a resounding success, bringing together almost 400 enthusiastic pupils to showcase their navigational skills, sportsmanship and teamwork.

Inclusivity is a fundamental principle of Sportscotland strategy and one which as a sport we are in terms of our funding are bound to promote. Having pulled together a group last year to discuss inclusivity within the sport and ways in which we could encourage the sport to be more inclusive we are looking to hear your views.
We are notifying all members of an Extraordinary General Meeting being held on Monday 9th June at 7pm online. The EGM Booklet detailing the proposed membership changes is attached and includes a printable proxy voting form together with a link to an electronic proxy voting form.
The Scottish Championship saw the handing over of the trophies and essential chocolate prizes for the 2024 Scottish Inter Club Championships. As previously indicated Forth Valley Orienteers (FVO) claimed both the Senior and Junior Large Clubs Inter Club titles last year with STAG (St Andrews Orienteering Club, Glasgow) claiming the Senior Small Club Iner Club title and Tayside Orienteers (TAY) claiming the Junior Small Club Inter Club title. Well done again to all involved.
The SOA Board got together last Saturday for one of their regular Board meetings. As a group they meet in person 7 times a year both in person and online. At meetings they ensure the staff team are delivering in terms of the Scottish Orienteering Strategy and the SportScotland development targets with each of the Directors focussing on their focus area.
The fifth session in the SOA’s monthly online Community Conversations series this year took a deep dive into the future of Scotland’s flagship orienteering event — the Scottish 6 Days. This was a very timely discussion, as we look forward to Deeside 2025 whilst also needing to address the significant structural and demographic challenges to its sustainability, if events in 2027 and beyond are to continue successfully.
The April session in the SOA’s monthly online Community Conversations series brought together club members from across Scotland to talk about coaching education and support. The session was introduced by Suzanne Robins-Bird, the SOA’s Coaching & Volunteer officer, with an open forum for questions and ideas submitted in advance as well as during the session.
