Juniors – are you a keen orienteer who would like to start getting involved in volunteering? Club volunteer coordinators – do you ever struggle to find event officials? Coaches – do you want a pair of young legs to help you out?
SOA Young Leader courses are all designed to give juniors the knowledge & experience to get involved with volunteering in the club, easing the load whilst giving them new, transferable skills. Run by experts who have worked in the roles for many years, we have 3 areas of expertise – hopefully something to suit everyone:
After the success of the last in person Coach CPD day at Kinnoull Hill the resolution was that we definitely needed more opportunities to get together in the woods with some maps and try out new ideas.
As the Jamie Stevenson Trophy hosts the presentation of the Young Orienteer of the Year Award this Sunday, it’s time to remind everyone of just how much young people are doing for our sport. Back in Nov 2022, we hatched a plan to recognise the contribution that our juniors make and to train them to fulfil those roles effectively – the Young Leader scheme was reborn. We envisaged 3 roles – coaching, planning and organising and designed courses and club experience logs.

Over the past few weeks Scottish Orienteering has been busy in Dundee. With the support of coach Matthew Clark (KFO) and volunteers from Tayside Orienteering Club (TAY) we have been running a series of family coaching sessions at Balgay Park, Dundee.
The SOA team are delighted to welcome you all to a Volunteer’s Day to be held at Glenmore Lodge on Sunday 2nd June. There will be a variety of workshops to cater for different interests and a chance to socialise before and after. We are extremely lucky to have our sportscotland national trainers delivering two first class workshops designed to enhance volunteer management.
Would you like to help others to improve their orienteering? This spring, Scottish Orienteering has several courses available to teach you to use your skills and experience in orienteering to help and encourage others. Read on for what we have available.

One of the main skills we use when orienteering is planning. To allow you to plan for the year ahead and develop your skills we have drawn together a list of the coaching and volunteer training opportunities for the year ahead. To avoid disappointment, get them in your diary now!
Sign up forms can be found on the SOA Website and will be advertised in due course or contact suzanne@scottish-orienteering.org for more details.

The subject of last week’s Community Conversation was ‘Coaching Culture’. Many thanks to all those who came along and shared their ideas. The first question that was raised was, ‘How do we get more people to come along to coaching/training sessions?’
