Today we celebrate two members, both Davids, who have a wide reaching commitment to many aspects of orienteering, fulfilling multiple roles to keep their clubs running smoothly.

The 2022 Scottish Inter-Club Championships kicks off this weekend with the first event, at Cambus o’May, Ballater, which will be hosted by MAROC.

The Inter-Club Championship takes on a vastly different look this year, with all five individual championship events (Long, Middle, Sprint, Night and Score) counting towards the total, as well as results from the Compass Point Scottish Orienteering League, the BTO Solicitors Scottish Urban Orienteering League, and regional events from around Scotland.

A briefing note has been prepared, giving more background on how the championships will operate, how scores are calculated and which clubs have been assigned to the “Large” and “Small” categories for 2022.

Good luck to all participants and all clubs – it promises to be an epic season of orienteering!

The penultimate Scottish Orienteering League (SOL) event of 2017 was staged by Grampian Orienteers whose website is sub-titled “Take a Run on the Wild Side.”  Forvie National Nature Reserve certainly lived up to this billing – in the pre-event information Gramp stated “It’s windswept, it’s wild, it’s wonderful (in our not-so-humble opinion but we’re sure you’ll agree)”.  Hurricane Ophelia was somewhere out to the west but still the wind forced the download team and their computers into the back of a van and there was some concern that the controls would be taking off into the North Sea. Last weekend was BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Orienteering. Students travelled from 23 different institutions from across the UK for a weekend of student orienteering. Each year a student club takes on the responsibility of hosting the competition. This year it was Edinburgh University’s turn to host. Let’s find out how the BUCS weekend went: 

Scottish Juniors made the long journey south to Doncaster at the weekend for the Junior Inter Regional Champs, with the individual races on a newly mapped area at Cowms Rocks and the relays in Tankersley woods on Sunday.

The board reserves the right to propose changes to event levies or memberships at a future date, depending upon the results of this trial period, and any other factors which become relevant. If it becomes necessary to propose a change, these will be brought forward to the AGM in the usual way.

On Friday 28 June, Callendar Park near Falkirk hosted the UK’s first ever orienteering event to be broadcast live, as The Adventure Show showed the JOK Chasing Sprint live on a beautiful summer evening, giving a fantastic introduction to the sport.

Scottish Orienteering is excited to introduce a brand‑new Junior Volunteer Awards Scheme, created to recognise and encourage juniors who are taking their first steps into volunteering. Juniors will be able to collect points and earn prizes for their volunteering in four different categories; planning, organising coaching and IT/results/timing. These awards are not about being the best at a role — they are about having a go and learning!

David has been the lynch pin of the GRAMP particularly over the last two years. On top of his regular Chairman duties, he works tirelessly as our main club coach, first aider, Facebook coordinator, entries and results coordinator (including for the Scottish Champs 2022, SHI relays 2021, Balmedie SOL 2021) and Covid Officer.
