Introducing the Junior Volunteer Award Scheme

Scottish Orienteering is excited to introduce a brand‑new Junior Volunteer Awards Scheme, created to recognise and encourage juniors who are taking their first steps into volunteering. Juniors will be able to collect points and earn prizes for their volunteering in four different categories; planning, organising coaching and IT/results/timing. These awards are not about being the best at a role — they are about having a go and learning!

How does the scheme work?

The scheme consists of four categories, each recognising a different area of contribution. Awards will be given to juniors in each category:

  • Planner
  • Organiser
  • Coach
  • IT / Results / Timing

Scoring System

  • 3 points for doing something for the first time or at a new level
  • 1 point for repeating a role at the same level
  • Double points if the junior completes the role independently (with a mentor available but not leading)

Juniors scoring the most points in each category will receive an award.

Scoring Form

A simple application form can be completed by:

  • the junior
  • a club fixture secretary
  • a coach
  • a committee member
  • an area squad official

Evidence can be drawn from activities between September 2025 and September 2026. If a young person volunteers for example as an IT expert at every club event, then just fill in the number of club activities/events that they volunteered at. Precise dates need not be identified for retrospect activities, but are expected from June 2026.

The form records:

  • the event or activity
  • the role undertaken
  • whether it was solo or shared
  • points awarded
  • mentor or official confirmation
