Volunteer week 2025- day 2

Today we celebrate two members, both Davids, who have a wide reaching commitment to many aspects of orienteering, fulfilling multiple roles to keep their clubs running smoothly.

David Esson

David is an absolute stalwart member of the Grampian Orienteers committee. He was Chair for many years but, although he has stepped down from this position due to health reasons, he remains extremely committed to ensuring the club runs successfully. He is at every Club event, welcoming new members, encouraging and coaching juniors, ensuring the IT equipment all works smoothly and posting results promptly. He regularly plans events and also acts as a controller for both club and national events. He is friendly and calm even when under pressure and makes a real effort to engage with and encourage everyone who attends events. I really think he deserves recognition for all the time, effort and positivity he puts into making orienteering an enjoyable sport for orienteers in Grampian and further afield.

David also served as Controller Advocate until ill health forced him to curtail his activities but his input was much appreciated by SOA.

Our Club is small but a core team work hard to try and deliver a regular programme of activities throughout the season. David is at the heart of that and goes above and beyond to help out. As well as organising and running some of our activities he searches out and produces small maps of new areas, maintains our equipment, sources replacement kit as required and on top of that, figures out most of the tech for providing results, attempting to educate the rest of us as he does so! I am more than happy to nominate him as a top volunteer!
