Three Scottish Clubs travelled to Pippingford Park in the Ashdown Forest, West Sussex, on Sunday October 20th, to compete in this year’s CompassSport Cup Final, with one claiming a clear victory.

As we’ve previously indicated we’re going to make a change to the inter club championships in 2022. Currently it is awarded to the club with the most points scored at the Scottish Individual Championships and it seems that most competitors are blissfully unaware of it.

We are keen to introduce a competition that encourages more participation at a range of events across Scotland, provides more motivation for juniors and engenders more club spirit. As ever there are numerous ways that we could do this (and even more opinions) but we have landed on a club league system that we will try in 2022, and review again for 2023 based on lessons learned.

The Scottish Orienteering League (SOL) provides a series of high quality events throughout Scotland’s countryside. High quality venues, maps and quality courses are the key aims and each of the annual events is organised and hosted by a different Scottish club.

Collecting data from people who enjoy Scotland’s countryside, the TickApp project is a citizen science study aiming to estimate the risk of exposure of humans to ticks and tick bites in Scotland.

A small band of Scottish club members made their way down to Milton Keynes and Wendover Woods for the British Sprint and Middle Championships this weekend. The Compass Sport Cup is a British Clubs Orienteering Championships. The Competition consists of an initial round in Spring and a Final round in the autumn. This year the initial round for the Scottish Clubs took place at Kinoull Hill Perth, hosted by Tayside Orienteers and the final was at South Gare, Redcar in the North East of England. Clubs are categorised into small (Trophy – 13 scorers) and large (Cup – 25 scorers) clubs. Forth Valley Orienteers are the only large club in Scotland. FVO, INT, ESOC, INVOC and MAROC had previously qualified at Kinoull and travelled down for the final. 

The University of Bristol hosted this year's British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Orienteering Championships in the Forest of Dean over the weekend 20th/21st February, with over 200 athletes representing 29 Universities in the individual and relay competitions.  

Sasha Chepelin (EUOC) won the Mens’ A race in 58:52 for the 10.5km course with 415m climb, and Charlotte Watson (EUOC) won the Women’s A race in 54:05 for the 7.4km course with a climb of 265m.  EUOC Legends won the Men’s Relay (Stansfield/Barr/Chepelin) and EUOC Legendesses won the Women’s Relay (Reynolds/Zoe Harding/Watson).  This, of course, led to the club winning the overall trophy, with Sheffield 2nd and Oxford 3rd.  Other Scottish universities in the championships were Heriot-Watt (9th), Strathclyde (13th), Glasgow (17th) and Aberdeen (21st).  Full results are on the Bristol Orienteering Club website.

This is not the first time that EUOC has made a clean sweep of trophies at the BUCS Championships, but Head of Performance Orienteering at Edinburgh University, Mark Nixon, said, “It’s been a fantastic weekend with strong performances across the board. Our girls dealt with the pressure of being favourites excellently and dominated the results as expected. Our young guys excelled to get the golds ahead of a very strong Sheffield team. I wouldn’t have predicted us taking home all four golds. It’s an awesome set of results.”

With ScotJOS winning the 2015 Junior Home International, and SEDS winning the 2015 Senior Home International and very strong performances at the World Championships last August from alumni of ScotJOS, EUOC and SEDS, it is clear that at the Junior and Senior performance levels of the sport, orienteering is extremely strong in Scotland.

The individual races to complete the 2015 Scottish Universities Orienteering Championships will take place at SOL1 at Elibank on 6th March.

The Scottish Orienteering Urban League (SOUL) focuses on urban racing in Scottish cities and towns. Events are frequently held in parks, urban areas, or close to urban centres.

After missing out in 2020 we are delighted to announce that SOL and SOUL trophies will be presented early in 2022 from the results of the 2021 series. The fourth and last Scottish Orienteering League event of 2025 saw us all off to the East Lothian seaside. Interlopers (INT) had timed the event to avoid the bird nesting season, updated the map and worked hard to engage with the four landowners to make sure control placing/car parking was possible.
