Launch of SOYL
An exciting milestone was reached today as we launched Scottish Orienteering Young Leader award with our inaugural course hosted in Perth.
SOYL offers young leaders from a variety of backgrounds the opportunity to support with the delivery of orienteering activities and learn about learning styles and delivering positive feedback. It is fantastic start point for anyone considering a coaching qualification or wanting to gain confidence to help introduce others to the sport!
A group of 9 young leaders aged 14-18 were led through the SOYL course by tutor, Mehmet. The course was a good balance of theory and practical to engage the young leaders. Our first group of young leaders represent 4 different clubs and a diverse geography from the Borders to the Highlands. They offer a glipmse into the exciting future of orienteering in the country and we hope they take away lots of ideas and inspiration to get active in their communities/clubs.
SOYL has been launched as part of our celebrations to mark Year of Young People 2018. We are grateful for the support from the Orienteering Foundation in allowing us to launch the award and offer the course in Perth.
It is hoped the SOYL award will be offered to clubs, youth groups and schools to extend the reach orienteering and provide young leaders an inspiring pathway into supporting more activity.
