We also received a Commendation for Sports Event of the Year, so all-in-all a tremendous night for the promotion of orienteering to a much wider audience. Colin Matheson, Events Manager for Scottish Orienteering, attended the red-carpet ceremony in Glasgow and was quick to thank key players through social media – Richard Oxlade was Event Coordinator for the Scottish 6 Days and Paul McGreal Event Director for WOC.
Concussion is a brain injury caused by direct or indirect force to the head. It results in a variety of non-specific signs and/or symptoms and most often does not involve loss of consciousness. The message around concussion is simple IF IN DOUBT, SIT THEM OUT.
In orienteering terms this is not quite as straightforward as taking someone off the rugby/football pitch but essentially remove the young person from the activity e.g. give up on their course and assist to finish. Coaches should be particularly aware of this, but all participants should be aware of symptoms and what to do.

Well they say that the sun shines on the righteous. The forecast for Sunday did not portend well and most who travelled to Cumbernauld had a damp journey there but the sun emerged in time for the 2022 Scottish Score Championships!

Six Scottish clubs participated in UK Orienteering's principal Club competition, the CompassSport Cup and Trophy Final. In the large Clubs section, FVO and ESOC both made the long journey to Tankersley, on the northern edge of Sheffield. In the small Clubs competition, Clyde, RR, Int and ECKO had all emerged from the Scottish qualifying heat, back in March. The mapped area was long and thin, with a dense and complicated path network, and competitors had already been alerted to a serious number of controls, as well as seriously long control descriptions: effectively, a long 'middle' race. That proved to be the case, with courses to cause blunders for the unwary, punishing lapses in concentration.
In the Cup competition, FVO were clear favourites to successfully defended the title that they'd won in the Lake District last year, and duly succeeded with a very clear victory over hosts SYO and BOK. FVO also had three on-the-day course winners, in Graeme Gristwood, Daniel Stansfield and Lizzie Stansfield.
The Trophy competition was much closer: last year, Interløpers had come second, on 'count-back', having tied with SROC, and initial results showed INT with a small lead over English Clubs East Pennine and South Ribble, as well as Clyde back in fourth place. However, Clyde had back-loaded their strongest runners, and later results pushed Clyde up to second, almost – but not quite – able to catch Interløpers, who regained the trophy they last won in 1996.
Tankersley presents a particular type of orienteering challenge. It is a wooded former mining area with innumerable, closely-spaced pits or depressions and a myriad of paths in random directions. 100% concentration for 100% of the time is required for a successful run.
A very long day out for many, but notable success for orienteering in Scotland, winning both competitions for the first time ever. Our thanks to SYO for a well organised event.
Next year, the Scottish qualifier is on March 12th, at Tentsmuir, hosted by KFO. The final will be at Yelverton, near Plymouth, in October.
The Scottish Inter-Club Championship moved into its seventh week, as ECKO hosted a Scottish Orienteering League fixture at Coille Nathais, near Taynuilt.

There are several Scottish Orienteering Championship events (SOC) held every year in different regions of Scotland, catering for different types of orienteering. Read More…All those from the North were glad to be travelling south to escape the weather for the third Compass Point Scottish Orienteering League Event (SOL) of 2023, where Tayside Orienteers (TAY) had managed to organise the sun to shine! There may have a been a nippy wind whistling round the car park but Dunalastair’s mix of open moorland and natural forest proved warm and welcoming.
The orienteering was technically challenging and plenty of people struggled with their route choice to despite the open terrain! For those that mastered the navigation and managed to find their way through the bog myrtle and across the bogs there were some great results which can be found together with routegadget via the TAY website

People had travelled from all over the UK for the event, which as well as being SOL 3 was also the last selection race for this year’s Junior Regional Orienteering Squad (JROS) Camps which offer opportunities for juniors from the twelve orienteering regions to gain further training and experience. JROS was established to nurture junior orienteering talent and runs camps, which aim to provide training whilst enthusing athletes with a sense of fun and purpose, for juniors between the age of 15 and 20.
Many thanks to TAY, their members and all others involved in staging the the event with a special mention for all the hard work for ensuring such a great event for the organiser Mike Pearson, the planner Alan Downie and controller Terry O’Brien BEM (STAG). The Scottish Junior Orienteering Squad (Scotjos) Cake Stall seemed to go down quite well too!
Last week saw a highly successful Scottish 6 Day event being staged in Lochaber, despite the many uncertainties, challenges and difficulties that had to be overcome in the lead up to the event. Big shout out for everyone who played a part in making it happen!
