The Moray Coast proved to be the ideal location to host the 2020 Scottish Night Championships and the first Compass Point SOL event of the year. While the rest of the country had battened down the hatches, the weather was fairly mild to allow for successful racing at both Findhorn and Darnaway

On Sunday 13th June following months of uncertainty we were delighted to welcome participants across Scotland to Scottish Championships hosted by ESOC at Craig a Barns, Perthshire. The sun shone over this fabulous terrain and everyone was treated to a special return to championship orienteering.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made the event possible with special gratitude to Margaret Dalgleish and Jayne MacGregor for their exemplary organising of the event under difficult circumstances, Roger Scrutton for his planning of courses and Sarah Dunn for controlling the event. As always there are a long list of volunteers who put in considerable efforts to make the event happen on the day but also behind the scenes before and after, we extend our considerable thanks to you.

NOTE FROM THE CONTROLLER, SARAH DUNN: Unfortunately, control 114 was incorrectly placed on a crag 20m to the north west of the boulder where it should have been sited. This affected competitors on the light green, blue and black courses. An official protest was made by a competitor on M60L. To make the results as fair as possible we have removed the split for the ingoing leg to 114 from each of these courses. The outgoing legs should not have been affected by the error, however, one competitor on M60L failed to find the control, so for that class only we have also removed the outgoing leg from 114. The results for M60L are now recorded as a separate course (BlueM60). Removal of the outgoing leg from other classes would have unfairly penalised runners who accurately navigated the following leg, compared with those that lost time there.

Congratulations to all our Scottish Champions of 2021 and those receiving our Scottish Orienteering Championship medals. We hope when restrictions allow we can present your trophies and give you the opportunity to stand on a podium. For now, a virtual applause is all we do!

Certificates will be posted to all Scottish Champions and also to those in Junior A classes who came 2nd and 3rd.  There will be additional certificates sent to those who won a class but were not eligible to be Scottish Champions.

Forth Valley Juniors claim Jamie Stevenson Trophy for 2023

Scotland’s junior orienteers gathered in Plean Country Park near Stirling yesterday to compete for their club in the Jamie Stevenson Trophy.  The Jamie Stevenson Trophy event is Scotland’s junior inter-club competition and acts as a fund raiser for the Scottish Junior Orienteering Squad (Scotjos).

Some 350 children from upper primary age to the upper age in secondary schools poured into Hopetoun House Gardens near South Queensferry on Friday 7^th June 2019 for the 2019 Scottish Schools Festival.

Alice Wilson (Clyde), Lizzie Stansfield (FVO) , Rachel Brown (ESOC) and Matthew Gooch (MAROC) represented Scotland on the last weekend in June as the first junior international orienteering competition of the year took place in Belarus.

Last weekend saw the first national orienteering championships since early 2020 with the British Middle Distance Championships being hosted by Lakeland Orienteering Club at Summerhouse Knott in the South Lakes on Saturday. The weekend was nominated as selection races for juniors and with the Northern Championships also being held in the area the following day, there was a very strong Scottish contingent that made the journey south.

We were off to a festive start as we celebrate Volunteer Week (1st -7th June 2022).

Thanks to the Volunteer team behind the scenes we have had a great Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival. Planner Roger Scrutton(ESOC) put on courses that made the most of a constrained area. Lorna Young (TINTO) efficiently handled the entries and kept things moving forward whilst Blair Young(TINTO) controlled the event and kept everything on track.

Auchingarrich proved a tough and testing area for the first day of Strathearn 2019, as orienteers from around the world enjoyed challenging terrain on a day with sunshine and a light breeze.

On Wednesday 30^th October, 24 orienteers from Scottish Clubs gathered at the East Lothian Outdoor Centre in Musselburgh for a workshop on the use of SPORTident and SI timing software. Robin Strain led the workshop and imparted some of his vast knowledge and experience to those of us who attended.

Having run the Scottish Inter Club Championship in its revised format for a few years, we listened to your feedback and acknowledge that in a busy calendar it was lost as an event.

The remit of the Scottish Inter Club Championship is to help clubs foster a feeling of club comradery and contribution towards the success of a club within its membership. Following feedback, we have therefore decided that it should take place alongside the CompassSport Cup/ Trophy qualification event in February each year and will act as an encouragement for clubs to get their members to participate even if they consider the CompassSport Final too far to travel or do not believe they have an opportunity to qualify.

As such the rules of the Scottish Inter Club Championship are being drawn up as we speak but the broad outline will be as follows:-

• There will be three divisions in the Scottish Inter Club Championships – Large, Medium and Small Clubs – based on the membership size of each club.
• The event will take place on the same day as the CompassSport Cup/Trophy qualifier.
• The Large Clubs will count 20 scores, the Medium clubs will count 10 and Small clubs count 6. This should mean that no club has to turn out their entire club to get on the scoreboard.
• Points will be awarded 100,99,98, etc across the classes.
• There will be no limit to the number of scorers in each class.
• All colour coded courses will count for the Scottish Inter Club Championships (including Light Green and Yellow which do not count for the CompassSport Cup/Trophy Qualifier)

We are hoping that this format should allow our smaller clubs to encourage participation in the day.

The Scottish Inter Club Championship results will be published in the week after the event and trophies will be awarded at the Scottish Individual Championship event in May.
