STAG member, Terry O’Brien BEM, receives 2025 BOF Volunteer of the Year award

The JK 2026 Sprint event saw the presentation of the 2025 BOF Volunteer of the Year Award to one of our members – Terry O’Brien BEM of St Andrew’s Orienteering Club of Glasgow (STAG). The Volunteer of the Year award recognises an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to supporting the delivery of orienteering activities with passion, energy, and enthusiasm. Well done and thoroughly deserved Terry!

Terry O’Brien formed STAG in 1982 and began serving on Scottish Orienteering Association Board for the best part of 30 years until the rules were changed. During his time he held responsibility for Publicity, Coaching, Competitions and as Operations Director reshaped the Events structure in early 2000.

Within STAG, Terry remains involved in all aspects of STAG daily business and is involved in not only planning and organising events for the club but also provides coaching for STAG members. Having been a PE teacher in Glasgow for 39 years, he continues to support orienteering programmes in schools throughout the Glasgow area after his retirement. He has installed numerous permanent courses, provided CPD training for teachers as well as having been involved in Scottish and British Schools Orienteering events over the years. 

As a controller he has supported many events over the years, including as controller for the British Schools Orienteering Event hosted by ESOC in 2025 and he is currently acting as coordinator for the 2026 Scottish Individual and Relay Championships.
