Scottish Juniors enjoying or set to enjoy JROS opportunities

This week will have seen many of our 14 and 16 age class Scottish juniors away exploring the delights of Lagganlia or Deeside with the Junior Regional Orienteering Squads (JROS) with older juniors getting ready to take part in camps in Czechia, Stockholm and Gothenburg.

For juniors it is a week of intensive training in some really interesting terrain combined with games and lots of other fun! For parents they get a week of peace followed by the return of a very tired but contented kid who might after quite a lot of sleep tell them tales of adventures and new friends but brings with them what seems like a month’s supply of dirty orienteering and other kit.

Not everyone can get selected for every camp but just because you miss out on one doesn’t mean you never will. There is always next year. Want to know more?

JROS is the umbrella organisation for the 12 UK regional development squads which include the Scottish Junior Orienteering Squad (ScotJOS). ScotJOS is wholly run by Scottish volunteers and falls under the remit of the Scottish Orienteering Association in the same way that there are regional development squads run by each of the other 11 UK regional associations. Each region nominates juniors to take part each year based on selection races and their knowledge of the junior.

JROS was set up to help develop junior orienteers by providing a series of training camps which help to enthuse athletes but also develop social bonds between juniors from different regions as well as providing opportunities for coaches to develop their coaching skills.

Initially in 2010 there was one camp but this has increased to five camps as follows
