Opportunities for all to improve their orienteering and to help others improve!

We tend to all have our aims when we enter events – we can’t all win, but often have aims like beating a clubmate or rival, finishing in less than a certain time, doing better than last time or simply just having fun in the outdoors. Preparing before the event and looking at how you performed after the event can help you to take stock and make it easier to reach goals in the future.

Scottish Orienteering are offering 2 free workshops to support participants attending the Scottish Orienteering Championships.  The first will be held before the event to help you prepare  and the second after the event to help you to objectively analyse how you performed.

Preparing for an Event Workshop – Thursday 21st May 7:30pm

Performance is not just a term for Elite orienteers and those looking to leave with silverware – we all want to be able to do as well as we can and  enjoy the event. Preparation beforehand can help with this aim. Often referred to as “geeking” – it’s simply an opportunity to look at maps and information about the area so that you know what to expect when you get there.

To help with this we will provide a guided session on Thursday 21st May at 7:30pm to help specifically with your preparation for the Scottish Orienteering Championships at Grandtully on Saturday 23rd May  as well as introducing tools you can use to help you prepare for future events.

Learning from the Event – Thursday 28th May 7:30pm

After an event it is so common to hear people say “I had so many mistakes”, “I was rubbish”, “I didn’t do well” or even “it was a complete fluke that I found that control”.  The first statement is never true and no-one makes mistakes – they generate learning! What went wrong and why – and how can I stop it from happening again is as important to consider as what went well and how can I make sure I keep doing that. The second workshop in the series will try to help you consider these questions and introduce you to tools and techniques which can be used to analyse your performance at future events.

This session will be held on Thursday 28th May at 7:30pm, using data from the individual event and views from others as to how they performed and what learning they can take forward to improve their orienteering (Don’t worry – we won’t put anyone on the spot on the evening!).
