A warm welcome to our new Chair of Scottish Orienteering, Keith Dawson (INT). Keith was voted in at the AGM on 28th May and we look forward to working with him to realise the vision of our Mapping the Way Forward Strategy 2020-2024. Keith brings to the role over 48years experience in the sport of orienteering as well as coveted experience from the business and charity sectors. Keith is a well known face within the Edinburgh orienteering scene as well as a representative for mountain bike orienteering on the IOF. Welcome Keith to the SOA!
The SOA AGM took place at Crathes Hall on Saturday 28th May. We would like to thank all those who attended the meeting and contributed to the discussions. We have published the minutes of the AGM and the finalised Accounts for 2021 below.
Before announcing the new incoming Directors we would like to say a sincere thank you to those that have participated in guiding the organisation forward this year and played an important role as Directors on the SOA Board, namely: Bridget Khursheed (RR), Neil Rankin and Peter Heffernan. Also to Anne Hickling who remains our Development Director and has been highly committed and done a tremendous job as our Chair for the past 3 years. Thank you to you all.
Some of you may be aware of an inspiring group of women including Fran Loots, our Development Officer and former staff member, Sarah Dunn as well as a number of orienteering club members are undertaking an amazing feat. Lynne has been a mainstay of Scottish Orienteering for many years now. As well as volunteering in BASOC both on the committee and as a coach, she has fulfilled many roles for the wider orienteering community in Scotland as well.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our SOA Development Team on a full time basis. This is an exciting time to join our team as we look forward to maximising the opportunity of hosting the Sprint World Championships 2024 in Edinburgh and raising the profile of our sport over the next few years. Closing date for application is Monday 27th June.

Despite being one of Scotland larger cities, Dundee has not seen much orienteering activity in recent years until now. Thanks to the Sprint Scotland team, the Scottish Sprint Champs in March at Balgay Park provided a springboard to encouraging wider participation in orienteering.

It has been great fun watching enthusiastic newcomers over the past couple of months. Now we need to see how we can support them to continue enjoying our sport.

James Laird has sometimes been referred to as “Mr. INVOC”. As well as being one of the Clubs top runners, with creditable showings in National events over many years, he has served two 3-year stints as club president, before moving on to become volunteer coordinator.
It’s an ESOC double whammy today with appreciation for volunteers Mark and Janet who continue to give sterling service to the club to ensure the smooth running of events.
Mark is always one of the first to volunteer to help out of our events usually involved in setting up events AND clearing up or control collection. He is 100% reliable.Janet, now in her senior years, is a tireless worker for the sport and Club Equipment Officer. Always keen to help and always a great motivator and always with a smile.
Robert is the Computing Co-ordinator for ESOC and has been for well over twenty years. This is long enough that he was instrumental in the introduction of the SportIdent system to Scottish events, like the JK, at Loch Rannoch in 2000. Robert maintains all our computers and SI equipment and brings them to every event, which invariably means arriving early and leaving late. Computing is central to the modern sport, and Robert has all the skills to remain calm and cheerful when solving the many problems it can throw up. Here he is doing what he does best – with a smile!
David has been the lynch pin of the GRAMP particularly over the last two years. On top of his regular Chairman duties, he works tirelessly as our main club coach, first aider, Facebook coordinator, entries and results coordinator (including for the Scottish Champs 2022, SHI relays 2021, Balmedie SOL 2021) and Covid Officer.
