Growing adult participation through ‘Learn to Orienteer’ courses
Throughout March, Scottish Orienteering has been excited to host three successful adult beginner “Learn to Orienteer” coaching days in Inverness, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen. These sessions were designed to introduce newcomers to the sport in a friendly, supportive environment, giving them the skills and confidence to go on and attend their first orienteering event.
Each day brought together a diverse group of participants, many trying orienteering for the very first time. From runners and walkers to complete beginners looking for a new outdoor activity, the sessions highlighted just how accessible and inclusive orienteering can be.

Building Confidence from the Ground Up
The coaching days focused on the fundamentals to begin with: understanding maps and how to set them, interpreting map symbols and colours, and developing basic navigation skills. Participants were guided through simple exercises before heading out on short courses, putting their new knowledge into practice. By the end of the day, most participants were completing a Light Green standard course.
Our qualified coaches and volunteers were on hand throughout, offering encouragement and practical tips.
Thanks to our coaches and volunteers!
These coaching days wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of local clubs, coaches, and volunteers. Their enthusiasm and expertise created a welcoming atmosphere that made it easy for newcomers to get involved and ask questions.
- Inverness – Suzanne Robins-Bird (lead coach), Rebecca Morris (assistant coach)
- Edinburgh – Judy Bell (lead coach), Katherine Ivory (assistant coach)
- Aberdeen – Katja Neumann (lead coach), Fiona McDonald (assistant coach)
Events like these play a vital role in growing the sport, helping people discover not only orienteering but also the strong community behind it.
What’s Next?
For many participants, we hope these sessions are just the beginning. With a calendar full of local events across Scotland, there are plenty of opportunities to continue developing skills and enjoying our wonderful sport.
We will be running these courses again, so if you or someone you know is interested in attending, please get in touch with louise@scottish-orienteering.org.uk and keep an eye on the SOA website and social media channels.
