Training
Last edited: 03rd Apr
We offer an opportunity for training on two areas mapped by JK mappers and representative of the main competition areas. Forest training at Calder Wood and urban training at Dedridge, both are within easy jogging/walking distance of assembly for the sprint day at Livingston, and controls will be in place from Thursday 5th April.
The current stock of maps has run out but attempting to get some more for Friday morning.
Top quality courses will be planned by the international athletes of the Scottish Elite Development Squad.

Printing Error
The Calder Wood map which was sent out had a problem when being printed and has scaled itself up to 1:5555 (rather than 1:7500). The map has been reprinted at the correct scale. Please contact Lorna Eades on lornaeades.nettlingflat@o2.co.uk or 07790462457 if you would like the 1:7500 version sending out to you or they can be collected at JK enquiries on Friday 6th April.
There are a few map packs still available. Please contact Lorna Eades on lornaeades.nettlingflat@o2.co.uk.

Forest Training
Calder Wood, mapped by DOLM, is a remarkable area of natural woodland on the edge of Livingston, protected from development by the ravines of the Linhouse and Murieston Waters. It comprises mainly runnable forest and semi-open with steep slopes and reasonable contour details. Although not as extensive as the JK competition areas, it is similar in character and ideal for preparation.
Urban Training
Dedridge, mapped by Graeme Ackland. Located between sprint race assembly and Calder Wood, and never previously used for orienteering, Dedridge is a typical central-belt housing estate similar to the main competition area. You can expect complex urban terrain with many small alleys and irregularly shaped minor roads and buildings. Running at Dedridge is the perfect preparation for the JK sprint.
Parking
There is no designated parking for the training event, although there is onstreet parking at Almondvale Shopping Centre and throughout the Dedridge area. Do not park in Mid Calder on the B7015 or the A71.
Other training options
Any time for more training? If so you can test yourself against TAY's Woodland Challenge on either Kinnoull Hill (just N of Perth, as used for the 6-Days) or Saint Magdalene's Hill (just S of Perth) or The Knock of Crieff (15 miles W of Perth, with lovely views of the start of The Highlands). Note, The Hermitage is unfortunately not usable owing to extensive windblow. See www.taysideorienteers.org.uk for the outlets in Perth and Crieff that stock the map pack (courses from TD2 to TD5). May be an idea to phone and check they have maps: Banks 01738 624928; Craigdon 01738 631006; Tourist Info 01738 450600; Crieff Hydro Activity 01764 651622, noting there is an easy (Trail/Discovery) and a TD3/TD5 (Discovery/Challenge) map.

The 2015 World Orienteering Championships will be based in Inverness, Scotland during August, and will utilise the world class terrain along the Moray coast and in the Cairngorms National Park. The Scottish 6 Days will run in parallel to the Championships and will bring 5000 competitors to the area boosting the local economy by an estimated £2 million.
To celebrate 50 years of the Scottish Orienteering Association we are organising various activities including the opportunity to complete 50 events in the course of the year (16 April 2011 to 15 April 2012). The JK may just help you complete the challenge.
