SUMMARY:Young Coach Assistant Glenmore Lodge - 26th April
DESCRIPTION:A course combining theory and practical for juniors with some knowledge of orienteering (TD3 standard )\, who are interested in helping with coaching in a club\, squad\, camp or school setting.  This course is a fun and sociable introduction to aspects of coaching and is in 2 parts: \n\n\n1.5 hours online (one evening during the week before the practical day)\nA fun practical day (10am – 4pm) on Sunday 26th April 2026.\nYou are required to attend both parts to complete the course.\n\nCost:\nThe training is provided free of charge but you will be required to commit to a period of mentored volunteering.\n\n\nCourse Content: \n\nDiscussion around what to coach and how to coach orienteering; practical self and peer evaluated exercises. \nPre-requisites: \nCompetent orienteers at least at TD3; M/W14+ \nOTHER NOTES: \n\nThis course counts as a pre-requisite for the SCCO Level 5 Club Coach course. \nMORE DETAIL: \nThis course will be held in Glenmore Lodge near Aviemore \nBook online through the Google form by Fri 17th April  or contact Suzanne Robins-Bird with any questions

DESCRIPTION:An initial\, unassessed course for orienteers who are interested in getting involved in coaching.  This fun course will give you the basics and get you on the pathway to becoming a coach. DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Coaching Certificate in Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA\, this course blends theory and practical providing the knowledge and skills to run single sessions within a framework set up by a more experienced coach. \nINTENDED FOR: \nActive Foundation level coaches or Young Coach Assistants interested in furthering their experience to gain a licenced coaching qualification.   \nCOURSE STRUCTURE \nDelivered mainly in person in the Central Belt over one weekend\, this course comprises: \n\n2 full days in person practical and theory which includes the assessment\nAll pre-course work will need to be completed prior to 23rd August.\nThe pre-course work will be sent out in late July giving the learner a good amount of time to complete the work.\n\nASSESSMENT: \nWritten tasks and observation of practical coaching sessions by a qualified assessor.  \nCOURSE OUTLINE: \nThe focus of the Club Coach is the single session usually progressing a skill within the session. Building on the basic skills and knowledge covered in Coaching Foundation\, the course includes the theory of what and how to coach\, practical exercise planning and delivery including risk management and developing yourself as a coach. \nPRE-REQUISITES: \n\nAttendance at Coaching Foundation course\nAged 17 or over\nEvidence of competence at orienteering at TD4 or above\nCurrent member of British Orienteering for insurance purposes\nSOA PVG\n\nCOST: \n£170 per person\, £200 non-members.  sportscotland funding is now administered through SOA and may cover part of your course fee depending on your circumstances. SUMMARY:Lead Coach  -  Autumn 2026 (Blended learning)
DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Coaching Certificate in Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA (SCQF L7)\, the Lead Coach course builds on the Club Coach (Level 5) qualification developing the knowledge and skills to run a coaching programme and supervise other coaches.  This replaces the old Level 2 course. \nINTENDED FOR:\nCompetent orienteers with some coaching experience. \nUSUAL DURATION:\nThe Lead Coach course comprises some 80 hours study.  This includes approx. 10 hours home study alongside 6 online tutor led sessions; 1.5 days of face-to-face tuition and formative assessment; further home study\, written tasks & reflective practice supported by a mentor\, finishing with a final half-day observed and assessed session. Learners have up to 2 years from the start of tuition to complete the qualification. \nASSESSMENT:\nWritten tasks and observation of practical coaching session by qualified assessor. \nCOST:\n£550 per person. (£600 non-members) Subsidies  may be available. A Lead Coach can focus on a series of coaching sessions.  They understand about progressing skills from one session to the next\, using different areas and refinements to make each session useful to a range of participants. \nA Lead Coach might mentor someone working towards a Club Coach qualification. \nLead Coaches are qualified to coach on type C areas and can undertake a short workshop on “Coaching Safely in Remote Areas” to allow them to coach in areas which would otherwise require an old Level 3 qualification. \nPRE-REQUISITES:\n\nUKCC/SQCO Level 1 orienteering coach qualification or equivalent.\nCurrent member of British Orienteering\nRecent evidence of competence at TD5 usually in the form of competition result.\nPVG\, CPWS & First Aid certificate commensurate with areas to be coached in are also required for licensing.\n\nOTHER NOTES:\nQualification should normally be completed within 2 years \nMORE DETAIL & BOOKING:\nIt is hoped to run the next course starting in the spring . SUMMARY:Junior Planners Workshops Nov 2026
DESCRIPTION:This series of workshops is for juniors who have no planning experience or have just started to do some planning and want to know more.  It will run across the following dates:\n\n\nMonday 2nd November – Optional Condes/Purple Pen workshop\nMonday 9th November – Workshop 1\nMonday 16th November – Workshop 2\nMonday 23rd November – Optional TD3/4 workshop\n\nThe workshops will be held on Zoom and run from 7:30pm to 9pm; it is expected that delegates will attend both workshops 1 and 2 and that they will have access to either Condes or Purple Pen on their computer.  Tablets / phones are not suitable for this and you will need to have uploaded and tried out your course planning software before the first workshop. There will be a planning exercise to do between each workshop date. \n\n\n\nAn optional workshop on Monday 2nd November is to ensure that learners are familiar with the basics of using either Condes or Purple Pen. It is strongly suggested that you attend this unless you are confident using course planning software. \n\nThe trainers will decide in conjunction with the learners whether to run the optional TD3/4 workshop and the date will be negotiable.\n\nCompletion of all 3 workshops\, including the accompanying homework\, followed by planning 3 courses in your club and submitting an experience log will earn you a Young Planners certificate and buff.\n\nPlease register using the Google form by Monday 20th October 2026 or email Judy with any queries.
