SUMMARY:Event Safety Workshop (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:An in-person Event Safety Workshop \n\nThis in-person Event Safety and Welfare (ESW) workshop is aimed at all who orienteer – whether you are a coach\, a competitor\, an event official (planner or organiser) or helper. It is a suitable refresher for those who have attended the course before – there are some new materials!\n\n\nDelivered in person in Edinburgh on the evening of 7th October\,  this 3 hour workshop will cover event safety and is a prerequisite for all event officials with SOA/BOF events and licenced coaches.  Exact venue TBC but will be at Central Campus of \Edinburgh University.\n\n\nThis workshop is free to Scottish members.\n\n\nPlease complete the  registration form asap.

SUMMARY:Coaching Foundation -  Autumn 2026 - blended learning
DESCRIPTION:An initial\, unassessed course for orienteers who are interested in getting involved in coaching.  This fun course will give you the basics and get you on the pathway to becoming a coach. Also useful for qualified coaches in need of a refresher.\nCOURSE STRUCTURE:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n•\n\n\n  Run mostly online\, with a practical club supported element\, this course will be held over 4 sessions.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n•\n  Weeks 1\, 2 & 4 – 1.5 hrs online weekday evenings.\n\n\n•\n  Dates are w/b   12th & 19th October and 2nd November .\n\n\n•\n  Exact day will be decided in consultation with learners to take other commitments into consideration.\n\n\n•\n  Week 3 is a club based self-evaluated practical session. Practical session by negotiation with club mentor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOURSE CONTENT:\n\nDiscussion based learning around what to coach and how to coach orienteering.\nPractical self and peer evaluated exercises.\n\nPRE-REQUISITES:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n•\n\n\n  Competent orienteers at least at TD3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n•\n  Age 16+ (open to negotiation for exceptional candidates)\n\n\n•\n  You must be able to arrange a practical exercise with either a club coach or a local school/youth organisation within the time frame of the course\, ideally between online sessions 2 & 3 but anytime before session 4. SUMMARY:Club Coach - 17th/18th October
DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Coaching Certificate in Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA\, this course blends theory and practical providing the knowledge and skills to run single sessions within a framework set up by a more experienced coach. \nINTENDED FOR: \nActive Foundation level coaches or Young Coach Assistants interested in furthering their experience to gain a licensed coaching qualification.   \nCOURSE STRUCTURE \nDelivered mainly in person in Edinburgh over a 2 day period\, this course comprises: \n\nA mixture of online\, tutor led\, interactive sessions and in-person sessions.  \nThe exact timetable will be decided in consultation with learners to take other commitments into consideration.\n2 full days in person practical and theory which includes the assessment\nThe first  session will be  17th October. All pre-course work will need to be completed prior to this date.\nThe pre-course work will be sent out in late July giving the learner a good amount of time to complete the work.\n\nASSESSMENT: \nWritten tasks and observation of practical coaching sessions by a qualified assessor. The practical assessment will take place during the weekend  of 17th/18th October  \nCOURSE OUTLINE: \nThe focus of the Level 5: Club Coach is the single session usually progressing a skill within the session. Building on the basic skills and knowledge covered in Coaching Foundation\, the course includes the theory of what and how to coach\, practical exercise planning and delivery including risk management and developing yourself as a coach. \nPRE-REQUISITES: \n\nAttendance at Coaching Foundation course\nAged 17 or over\nEvidence of competence at orienteering at TD4 or above\nCurrent member of British Orienteering for insurance purposes\nSOA PVG\n\nCOST: \n£170 per person\, £200 non-members.  sportscotland funding is now administered through SOA and may cover part of your course fee depending on your circumstances. DESCRIPTION:A Grade C Controllers’ Course is being run on 17th October 2026\, one day\, 10 am – 4 pm at Kinnoull Hill\, Perth \n\nAs well as attending the course\, the requirements for obtaining the Grace C controller licence are: \n\n\nHave organised a competition registered with British Orienteering within the previous 10 years.\nHave planned a minimum of 3 events\, with at least one at Level C\, and at least one within the previous 5 years.\nCompletion of mandatory British Orienteering Event Safety & Welfare Workshop.\nBe appointed to the Grade by their Regional Association.\n\nThese can all be completed after the course but a good level of competence at control placement is required for the course.\n\n\n\nPlease register an interest by filing in the Google form – dates and exact location will be decided depending on requirements of participants.

SUMMARY:Lead Coach  -  Autumn 2026 (Blended learning)
DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Coaching Certificate in Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA (SCQF L7)\, the Lead Coach course builds on the Club Coach (Level 5) qualification developing the knowledge and skills to run a coaching programme and supervise other coaches.  This replaces the old Level 2 course. \nINTENDED FOR:\nCompetent orienteers with some coaching experience. \nUSUAL DURATION:\nThe Lead Coach course comprises some 80 hours study.  This includes approx. 10 hours home study alongside 6 online tutor led sessions; 1.5 days of face-to-face tuition and formative assessment; further home study\, written tasks & reflective practice supported by a mentor\, finishing with a final half-day observed and assessed session. Learners have up to 2 years from the start of tuition to complete the qualification. \nASSESSMENT:\nWritten tasks and observation of practical coaching session by qualified assessor. \nCOST:\n£550 per person. (£600 non-members) Subsidies  may be available. Please contact judy@scottish-orienteering.org for more information. \nMAIN TOPICS:\nRoles of a  Lead Coach and coaching philosophy\nInclusivity\nSafety\, risk and welfare\nEngagement and motivation\nTechnical skills and performance\n  \nMORE INFORMATION: \nThe Lead Coach may work alone or co-ordinate a coaching team\, within a club or group of clubs. A Lead Coach can focus on a series of coaching sessions.  They understand about progressing skills from one session to the next\, using different areas and refinements to make each session useful to a range of participants. \nA Lead Coach might mentor someone working towards a Club Coach qualification. \nLead Coaches are qualified to coach on type C areas and can undertake a short workshop on “Coaching Safely in Remote Areas” to allow them to coach in areas which would otherwise require an old Level 3 qualification. \nPRE-REQUISITES:\n\nUKCC/SQCO Level 1 orienteering coach qualification or equivalent.\nCurrent member of British Orienteering\nRecent evidence of competence at TD5 usually in the form of competition result.\nPVG\, CPWS & First Aid certificate commensurate with areas to be coached in are also required for licensing.\n\nOTHER NOTES:\nQualification should normally be completed within 2 years \nMORE DETAIL & BOOKING:\nIt is hoped to run the next course starting in the spring .
