SUMMARY:Level 1 Coaching Course L1 C  - (Partly Online)
DESCRIPTION:Previously known as UKCC coach qualifications\, we now have our own Scottish Coach Qualifications which are fully accredited by the SQA\, and are comprehensive and practical courses relevant for coaching in a Scottish context. \nThis is a high quality coaching qualification for orienteers who have attended the Coaching Foundation course. It provides skills to run single sessions. Subsidies are usually available from sportscotland. \nINTENDED FOR:\nActive orienteers interested in gaining their coaching qualification \nUSUAL DURATION:\nAs re-designed to be delivered partly online\, this course will extend through three sessions\,  2 x  1.5 hr online and 1 full day in person practical and tutor assessed. \nThe first online session will be 10 January. All pre-course work will need to be completed prior to this date.  \nThe pre-course work will be outlined in early December giving the learner a good amount of time to complete the work. \nASSESSMENT:\nBy qualified tutor. \nCOST:\n£150 per person\, £175 non-members.  Subsidy may be available from sportscotland; check your eligibility and apply via their website. \nMIN/MAX.:\n4/6\nMAIN TOPICS:\nLevel 1 is the “Assistant Coach”\, usually working with a more qualified coach though sometimes delivering a session alone after having received guidance from a more qualified coach. SUMMARY:Workshop on Orienteering for Youngsters with Autism
DESCRIPTION:The SOA Development team is organising a workshop on orienteering for youngsters with autism and related additional support needs\, to be held at Levenmouth Academy\, Fife\, on Nov 16th. There are a few places available for interested orienteers to attend and contribute to the workshop. \nThe plan for the workhop is below. Please contact Sarah Dunn\, sarah@scottish-orienteering.org \, if you are interested in attending. The remaining spaces will be assigned on a first come basis. \nDate and Venue:\nLevenmouth Academy\, Fife\, Sat 16th Nov 10:00-15:30 \nObjective:\nTo explore how orienteering can be used positively to support youngsters on the autistic spectrum and how the sport can be marketed to encourage participation by this group \nParticipants:\nSOA development team\, Invited specialists in autism\, Orienteers with an interest in working with ASN youngsters. ~15 people. We already have 10 confirmed attendees \nFormat:\nThe detailed programme for the day is still to be confirmed and open to input from participants. The overarching aim is to come up with a plan for trialling and implementing some ideas of how to take orienteering out to autistic youngsters. This is likely to include taking ideas away from the day to develop a funding  application to support the work. Some of the things to consider include: \n\ntarget groups\nidentifying the benefits (i.e. why do we want to do it)\nidentifying any likely “problems”\ntypes of activity\nsuitable locations (school playground / parklands / elsewhere)\npotential trial areas\n\nCosts:\nThe SOA will cover reasonable travel costs for invited participants to attend the workshop including mileage at SOA volunteer rate or travel by train / bus. Lunch and refreshments will be provided free of charge.

DESCRIPTION:INTENDED FOR:\nCapable orienteers with some coaching experience \nUSUAL DURATION:\nApprox. 10 hours home study\, then 2 days of tuition and formative assessment observed coaching session\, further home study and written tasks & reflective practice (approx. 20 hours)\, half-day final observed session \nASSESSMENT:\nWritten tasks and observed sessions \nCOST:\n£300 per person. Subsidy may be available from sportscotland; check your eligibility and apply via their website. \nMIN/MAX.:\n4/8 \nMAIN TOPICS:\nThe Level 2 coach often works alone or co-ordinating a small coaching team\, usually within a club or a small cluster of clubs. A Level 2 coach can focus on a series of coaching sessions\, often working towards a particular event. They understand about progressing skills from one session to the next\, using different areas and refinements to make each session useful to a range of participants. \nA Level 2 coach might mentor someone working towards that qualification. \nLevel 2 coaches are qualified to coach on type C areas\, and can undertake a short workshop on “Coaching Safely in Remote Areas” to allow them to coach in areas which would otherwise require a Level 3 qualification. \nThe Level 2 course involves some independent learning and practical tasks before and after the tuition element\, some logged experience (with mentor)\, one assessment session soon after the tuition\, and the final assessment when all other tasks have been completed. Learners have up to 2 years from the start of tuition to complete the qualification. \nADD PDF LINK \nPRE-REQUISITES:\n\nRecent evidence of competence at TD5 (Green\, Blue etc.) before their final assessment. SUMMARY:Introducing Orienteering (IntrO)
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Orienteering course aimed towards teachers and educators who work in a school or outdoor centre. A tool kit of activities and initiatives will be taught. \nWhile sometimes taught as one full day\, this course is split into two half days\, one on August 30 and the other September 6. \nAll participants are given a resource folder upon completion of the course. \nINTENDED FOR:\nTeachers\, Outdoor Centre instructors\, Scout leaders etc. \nMAIN TOPICS:\nIntroduction to the basic skills of orienteering through indoor and outdoor activities\, and how to bring a variety of subjects to life through the medium of orienteering. \nPRE-REQUISITES:\nNo prior knowledge of orienteering is required\, but you are expected to have a basic understanding of how young people learn. \nOTHER NOTES:\nCourses are often arranged in response to local demand. \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION\nOn this day course you will learn how to introduce the basic skills of orienteering through indoor and outdoor activities\, and how to bring a variety of subjects to life through the medium of orienteering.  As well as offering the incentive for significant physical activity\, orienteering offers links with many areas of the curriculum which are of genuine interest to young people: \n\nEnvironmental awareness\nSpatial awareness\nMathematical calculations\nITC\nLanguage skills – learning new languages and developing existing communication skills\nTeam work\nPlanning\nProblem solving\nIndependence and self confidence\n\nWe can also provide an extended (2-day) course in which you will also learn how to take the orienteering beyond the confines of school or centre grounds. We pride ourselves on adjusting the scope to meet the needs of attendees. \nCourses are taught by our qualified\, experienced and enthusiastic tutors\, at various locations throughout Scotland\, often on “in-service” days. A Level 2 coach can focus on a series of coaching sessions\, often working towards a particular event. They understand about progressing skills from one session to the next\, using different areas and refinements to make each session useful to a range of participants. \nA Level 2 coach might mentor someone working towards that qualification. \nLevel 2 coaches are qualified to coach on type C areas\, and can undertake a short workshop on “Coaching Safely in Remote Areas” to allow them to coach in areas which would otherwise require a Level 3 qualification. \nThe Level 2 course involves some independent learning and practical tasks before and after the tuition element\, some logged experience (with mentor)\, one assessment session soon after the tuition\, and the final assessment when all other tasks have been completed. DESCRIPTION:INTENDED FOR:\nTeachers\, Outdoor Centre instructors\, Scout leaders etc. \nUSUAL DURATION:\nOne day (6 hours)\, or two 3-hour sessions. Tutor led\, highly practical. \nASSESSMENT:\nNot assessed \nCOST:\nFrom £49 to £70 per person (one day version) \nMIN/MAX:\n6/14 \nMAIN TOPICS:\nIntroduction to the basic skills of orienteering and some games and activities to teach and develop them \nPRE-REQUISITES:\nNo prior knowledge of orienteering is required\, but you are expected to have a basic understanding of how young people learn. \nOTHER NOTES:\nCourses are often arranged in response to local demand. \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION\nOn this day course you will learn how to introduce the basic skills of orienteering through indoor and outdoor activities\, and how to bring a variety of subjects to life through the medium of orienteering.  As well as offering the incentive for significant physical activity\, orienteering offers links with many areas of the curriculum which are of genuine interest to young people: \n\nEnvironmental awareness\nSpatial awareness\nMathematical calculations\nITC\nLanguage skills – learning new languages and developing existing communication skills\nTeam work\nPlanning\nProblem solving\nIndependence and self confidence\n\nThe full course is best delivered as a single 6-hour day\, but we can split it into shorter sessions if that suits your timetable better. We can also provide an extended (2-day) course in which you will also learn how to take the orienteering beyond the confines of school or centre grounds. We pride ourselves on adjusting the scope to meet the needs of attendees. \nCourses are taught by our qualified\, experienced and enthusiastic tutors\, at various locations throughout Scotland\, often on “in-service” days.
