SUMMARY:Coaching Foundation (CF/26_2) – Blended Learning
DESCRIPTION:An initial\, unassessed course for orienteers who are interested in getting involved in coaching.  This fun course will give you the basics and get you on the pathway to becoming a coach. Also useful for qualified coaches in need of a refresher.\nCOURSE STRUCTURE:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n•\n\n\n  Run mostly online\, with a practical club supported element\, this course will be held over 4 sessions.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n•\n  Weeks 1\, 2 & 4 – 1.5 hrs online weekday evenings.\n\n\n•\n  Dates are w/b  25th May\, 1st & 15th Jun 2026  .\n\n\n•\n  Exact day will be decided in consultation with learners to take other commitments into consideration.\n\n\n•\n  Week 3 is a club based self-evaluated practical session. Practical session by negotiation with club mentor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nCOURSE CONTENT:\n\nDiscussion based learning around what to coach and how to coach orienteering.\nPractical self and peer evaluated exercises.\n\nPRE-REQUISITES:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n•\n\n\n  Competent orienteers at least at TD3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n•\n  Age 16+ (open to negotiation for exceptional candidates)\n\n\n•\n  You must be able to arrange a practical exercise with either a club coach or a local school/youth organisation within the time frame of the course\, ideally between online sessions 2 & 3 but anytime before session 4. You will be supported in this process.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nCOST: \n£50 per person (non-members £75) \nOTHER NOTES: \nThis course is a pre-requisite for the SCCO Level 5 Club Coach course. \nREGISTRATION: \nBook online through the Google form or contact Suzanne Robins-Bird with any questions.  Closing date for applications is Friday 8th May 2026

SUMMARY:Lead Coach  -  Autumn 2026 (Blended learning)
DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Coaching Certificate in Orienteering fully accredited by Qualifications Scotland (Level 7)\, the Lead Coach course builds on the Club Coach (Level 5) qualification developing the knowledge and skills to run a coaching programme and supervise other coaches.  This replaces the old Level 2 course. \nINTENDED FOR:\nCompetent orienteers with some coaching experience. \nUSUAL DURATION:\nThe Lead Coach course comprises some 80 hours study.  This includes approx. 10 hours home study alongside 6 online tutor led sessions; 1.5 days of face-to-face tuition and formative assessment; further home study\, written tasks & reflective practice supported by a mentor\, finishing with a final half-day observed and assessed session. Learners have up to 2 years from the start of tuition to complete the qualification. \nASSESSMENT:\nWritten tasks and observation of practical coaching session by qualified assessor. \nCOST:\n£550 per person. (£600 non-members) Subsidies  may be available. Please contact judy@scottish-orienteering.org for more information. \nMAIN TOPICS:\nRoles of a  Lead Coach and coaching philosophy\nInclusivity\nSafety\, risk and welfare\nEngagement and motivation\nTechnical skills and performance\n  \nMORE INFORMATION: \nThe Lead Coach may work alone or co-ordinate a coaching team\, within a club or group of clubs. A Lead Coach can focus on a series of coaching sessions.  They understand about progressing skills from one session to the next\, using different areas and refinements to make each session useful to a range of participants. \nA Lead Coach might mentor someone working towards a Club Coach qualification. \nLead Coaches are qualified to coach on type C areas and can undertake a short workshop on “Coaching Safely in Remote Areas” to allow them to coach in areas which would otherwise require an old Level 3 qualification. \nPRE-REQUISITES:\n\nUKCC/SQCO Level 1 orienteering coach qualification or equivalent.\nCurrent member of British Orienteering\nRecent evidence of competence at TD5 usually in the form of competition result.\nPVG\, CPWS & First Aid certificate commensurate with areas to be coached in are also required for licensing.\n\nOTHER NOTES:\nQualification should normally be completed within 2 years \nMORE DETAIL & BOOKING:\nThe next course will be starting November 2026.
