SUMMARY:Club Coach (L5/25_2) – In person
DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Coaching Certificate in Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA\, this course blends theory and practical providing the knowledge and skills to run single sessions within a framework set up by a more experienced coach. \nINTENDED FOR: \nActive Foundation level coaches or Young Coach Assistants interested in furthering their experience to gain a licenced coaching qualification.   \nCOURSE STRUCTURE \nDelivered mainly in person in Edinburgh over a 1 week period\, this course comprises: \n\nA mixture of online\, tutor led\, interactive sessions and in-person sessions.  \nThe exact timetable will be decided in consultation with learners to take other commitments into consideration.\n2 full days in person practical and theory which includes the assessment\nThe first  session will be  w/b 8th Sep. All pre-course work will need to be completed prior to this date.\nThe pre-course work will be sent out in late July giving the learner a good amount of time to complete the work.\n\nASSESSMENT: \nWritten tasks and observation of practical coaching sessions by a qualified assessor. The practical assessment will take place during the week of 8th September 2025 \nCOURSE OUTLINE: \nThe focus of the Level 5: Club Coach is the single session usually progressing a skill within the session. Building on the basic skills and knowledge covered in Coaching Foundation\, the course includes the theory of what and how to coach\, practical exercise planning and delivery including risk management and developing yourself as a coach. \nPRE-REQUISITES: \n\nAttendance at Coaching Foundation course\nAged 17 or over\nEvidence of competence at orienteering at TD4 or above\nCurrent member of British Orienteering for insurance purposes\nSOA PVG\n\nCOST: \n£170 per person\, £200 non-members.  sportscotland funding is now administered through SOA and may cover part of your course fee depending on your circumstances. SUMMARY:Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport - 1st July 2025
DESCRIPTION:This course\, approved by Children First and run by sportscotland is for all those involved in coaching\, including Foundation coaches and helpers\, or otherwise working with juniors in the club\,  e.g. chaperones on weekends away or providing First Aid cover.  All those volunteering in such capacities should have a PVG and undertake CWPS training. \nSportscotland CWPS training comprises 2 modules: \n\nModule 1– An online self-paced (approx 45 minutes) module hosted on Brightspace.  Once registered you will be sent log in details for Brightspace to allow you to complete module 1 before attending module 2.\n\n\nModule 2 – A three hour online face-to-face training course lead by one of sportscotland’s approved tutors.  Learners must complete both modules to gain the qualification and receive their certificate.\n\nOnce complete the training lasts for 3 years after which you only need to do a self-paced online renewal to last you another 3 years.\n\n\n\nCost: £10 – this may be covered by your club – please speak to your club treasurer.

DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Coaching Certificate in Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA (SCQF L7)\, the Lead Coach course builds on the Club Coach (Level 5) qualification developing the knowledge and skills to run a coaching programme and supervise other coaches.  This replaces the old Level 2 course. \nINTENDED FOR:\nCompetent orienteers with some coaching experience. \nUSUAL DURATION:\nThe Lead Coach course comprises some 80 hours study.  This includes approx. 10 hours home study alongside 6 online tutor led sessions; 1.5 days of face-to-face tuition and formative assessment; further home study\, written tasks & reflective practice supported by a mentor\, finishing with a final half-day observed and assessed session. DESCRIPTION:An initial course for orienteers who are interested in coaching.  This course will give you the foundations and get you on the pathway to becoming a coach.  This delivery was scheduled for ELO but there are spaces for additional learners.  You would need to arrange you own practical session but would receive support from your tutors/club to do so. \nRun mostly online\, with a practical club supported element\, this course will be held over 4 sessions. Sessions 1\,2 & 4 online 1.5 hrs\,  session 3  club based practical session. SUMMARY:SQCO Level 2 Coaching Course March 2022 – (Blended learning)
DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Qualification in Coaching Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA\, the Level 2 course builds on the Level 1 qualification developing the knowledge and skills to run a coaching programme and supervise other coaches. \nINTENDED FOR:\nCapable orienteers with some coaching experience \nUSUAL DURATION:\nApprox. 10 hours home study and written tasks along with 5 to 8 online workshops (lasting aprox. 1 hour each)\, preceding 1.5 days of tuition\, followed by club coaching sessions & reflective practice supported by a mentor (approx. 20 hours)\, half-day final observed session. Learners have up to 2 years from the start of tuition to complete the qualification. \nASSESSMENT:\nWritten tasks and observed sessions \nCOST:\n£300 per person. Subsidy may be available from sportscotland; check your eligibility and apply via their website. \nMAIN TOPICS:\nThe Level 2 coach often works alone or co-ordinating a small coaching team\, usually within a club or a small cluster of clubs. A Level 2 coach can focus on a series of coaching sessions\, often working towards a particular event. They understand about progressing skills from one session to the next\, using different areas and refinements to make each session useful to a range of participants. \nA Level 2 coach might mentor someone working towards a L1 qualification. \nLevel 2 coaches are qualified to coach on type C areas and can undertake a short workshop on “Coaching Safely in Remote Areas” to allow them to coach in areas which would otherwise require a Level 3 qualification. \nThe Level 2 course involves some independent learning and practical tasks before and after the tuition element\, formative assessment during the face-to-face element\, some logged experience (with mentor) and the final assessment when all other tasks have been completed. \nPRE-REQUISITES:\n\nRecent evidence of competence at TD5 usually in the form of competition result.\nUKCC/SQCO Level 1 orienteering coach qualification or equivalent\, or completion of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for approved candidates\nCurrent member of British Orienteering\n\nMORE DETAIL & BOOKING:\nIt is proposed to run the first course starting March 2022. DESCRIPTION:A Scottish Qualification in Coaching Orienteering fully accredited by the SQA\, this course blends theory and practical providing the knowledge and skills to run single sessions within a framework set up by a more experienced coach. \nINTENDED FOR: \nFoundation level coaches interested in furthering their experience to gain a formal coaching qualification. \nUSUAL DURATION: \nRe-designed to be delivered mainly online\, this course comprises four tutor led\, interactive sessions online (1 – 1.5 hrs each) and 1 full day in person practical which includes the assessment. \nThe first online session will be 1 March 2022. All pre-course work will need to be completed prior to this date. \nThe pre-course work will be sent out in early February giving the learner a good amount of time to complete the work. \nASSESSMENT: \nWritten tasks and observation of practical coaching session by qualified assessor. \nCOST: \n£150 per person\, £175 non-members.  Subsidy may be available from sportscotland; check your eligibility and apply via their website. \nCOURSE OUTLINE: \nThe focus of the Level 1\, Assistant Coach\, is the single session usually progressing a skill within the session. SUMMARY:Level 1 Coaching Course 5 Oct 2021
DESCRIPTION:Previously known as UKCC coach qualifications\, we now have our own Scottish Coach Qualifications which are fully accredited by the SQA\, and are comprehensive and practical courses relevant for coaching in a Scottish context. \nThis is a high quality coaching qualification for orienteers who have attended the Coaching Foundation course. It provides skills to run single sessions. Subsidies are usually available from sportscotland. \nINTENDED FOR:\nActive orienteers interested in gaining their coaching qualification \nUSUAL DURATION:\nAs re-designed to be delivered partly online\, this course will extend through three sessions\,  2 x  1.5 hr online and 1 full day in person practical and tutor assessed. \nThe first online session will be 5 Oct. All pre-course work will need to be completed prior to this date. Following online session will be 19 Oct with the face to face assessment 30 Oct. (location tbd) \nThe pre-course work will be outlined in early Sept giving the learner a good amount of time to complete the work. \nASSESSMENT:\nBy qualified tutor. \nCOST:\n£150 per person\, £175 non-members.  Subsidy may be available from sportscotland; check your eligibility and apply via their website. \nMIN/MAX.:\n4/6\nMAIN TOPICS:\nLevel 1 is the “Assistant Coach”\, usually working with a more qualified coach though sometimes delivering a session alone after having received guidance from a more qualified coach. The focus of the Level 1 coach is the single session\, usually progressing a skill within the session.
