Junior Selection Opportunities 2018

For ALL Scottish Juniors

If you are keen, there are lots of opportunities to take your orienteering further. Below are details of the various events, camps and programmes that are available.

1.  Scottish teams at inter-regionals/home nations competitions

Athletes who wish to be considered for these teams are expected to run in their age class at selection races so that results can be compared across a peer group. Results when running up in a more senior class will not be considered.

Any illness or injury that prevents an athlete from competing at a selection race will be taken in to account so long as we are notified in advance of that race (); the Panel does not expect you to run with an illness or injury and any result will stand should you decide to do so.

a) Junior Inter-Regional Championships (JIRCs)

Will take place in East Midlands over the weekend of September 29/30 2018. Each region (9 from England plus Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland) can enter up to 4 juniors from each age group, M/W 14, 16, 18.

The Scotland team for this competition will be selected from juniors who are members of any Scottish club on the basis of at least 3 results in the following races:

Based on percentage time behind the winner, an individual’s best 3 results within their age group will be taken into account. The team will be published on the SOA website by the middle of August and individual athletes notified by email.

b)    Junior Home Internationals (JHIs)

Between the 4 Home Nations take place in Scotland (Pitlochry) over the weekend of October 6th-7th 2018  The team consists of up to 4 athletes in each age group, M/W 14, 16, 18, all of whom must be resident in Scotland, born in Scotland or have a parent who was born in Scotland.

The Scotland team for this competition will be selected from eligible juniors on the basis of at least 3 results in the following races:

2.  Junior Regional O Squads’ Camps

These camps are organised by the Association of Junior Regional Squads (JROS) aimed at giving experience to as many juniors as possible across the age groups.

Each November there is a weekend at Hawkshead, Lake District for M/W16s co-ordinated through JROS. With more 16s in Scotland than places available, the ScotJOS Lead Coach co-ordinates the invitations to ensure that as many appropriately experienced* 16s as possible get to go once.

3.  British Orienteering Teams and Talent Squad

The Selection process is used to select the Talent Squad, invitees to training camps and teams for international junior competitions. The aim of the process is twofold:

  • To underpin the developmental pathway for athletes who have shown, or may develop, the potential to become top 20 place competitors in future JWOCs
  • To identify exceptional young athletes who will benefit and learn from being a part of the talent programme and from preparing for and competing in various International Championships (EYOC, JWOC and JEC)

Selection Races in 2018 will be:

21st-22nd April Northern Champs Weekend: special Sprint courses for 16/18/20 and Long

 

Any athlete aspiring to GB Selection is expected to have results in all the above races. Further detail is available at www.britishorienteering.org.uk/Selection

 

4. Scottish Junior Orienteering Squad

The Scottish Junior Orienteering Squad (ScotJOS) exists to provide a coaching and development programme for young Scottish orienteers, M/W14* – 18, who show talent in the sport and commitment to improve their performance. The squad is selected each September* and aims to focus resources on those who show potential to be top performers at national level in the future.

Athletes are expected to run in their age-class for the event entered (eg SOL/Scottish Championships) so that results can be compared across a peer group. Results when running up are unlikely to be considered unless notified beforehand to the ScotJOS Manager.

*Note that second year M/W12s will not be selected

It is recognised that junior athletes will not attend all these races but the panel will expect at least 3 results in 2018 from:
