Scottish O League 3, Balkello, 16th May

Taking place on a brand new area for orienteering, on the Sidlaw Hills north of Dundee.
Results and RouteGadget now available

There will be limited EOD for courses for which maps are still available, most likely White, Orange, Yellow, Light Green and Long Orange.

More details and online entry link on the Tay website.

At Balkello this Sunday, TAY are again offering new, novel and challenging orienteering. The area is the perfect antidote for those who found Auchingarrich somewhat overwhelming. Instead of navigating round the green stuff growing out of the ground (that was the idea!), the challenge at Balkello will be navigating to the holes in the ground. It may well generate a similar amount of comment.

A few photos should be appearing on the TAY website to give you an idea.

Much of the hill running is fast grass / short heather, but there are some areas of thick heather – let us know what your thoughts are about indicating this (apparently the screed used at Newtyle is not an official symbol).

Balkello entries will not reach the dizzy heights of Auchingarrich but it is looking as though they will be over 300 and we think there should be enough maps, but to be sure, get your entry in asap.

Just a reminder - the mapped area is mainly open hillside with areas of scattered Scots pine, and includes numerous areas with old quarry workings resulting in fine technical detail. Lower down is the Balkello community woodland, with a comprehensive path network.  There are fine views over Dundee and Angus from the hill areas.
