Scotland’s Sporting Chance
Today sees the launch of Active Nation, a public engagement programme designed to inspire the people of Scotland to be more active in their everyday lives. This closely follows the publication of a Manifesto for Sport in Scotland which seeks commitment from all political parties to endorse and invest in sport.
There is little doubt that over the last few years sport has moved up the political agenda and keeping pace with, and prioritising, opportunities for orienteering is becoming increasingly difficult. Brief descriptions and links to some recent initiatives are given below:
Active Nation, launched 1st March 2010, is a public engagement programme designed to inspire the people of Scotland to be more active in their everyday lives in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games and beyond. Mainly, but not exclusively, targets people not sufficiently active to maintain healthy lives

Scotland’s Sporting Chance – A Manifesto for Sport on Scotland was published in February 2010 by the Scottish Sports Alliance and seeks commitment from political parties to endorse and invest in sport should they be elected to form the next Scottish Government in 2011. Summary of key commitments sought are:
- to deliver a minimum of 2 hours quality PE per week in schools
- to strengthen the Active Schools network and introduce Active Students in the tertiary sector
- to look into the feasibility of Physical Activity Reports for all primary 7 pupils
- to develop an Independent Sports Learning Account to assist coaches and volunteers to gain sports qualifications
- to develop a flexible working initiative for those who regularly coach and volunteer in sport
- to ensure schools are open for community use outside school hours
- to promote affordable prices and accessible facilities that reward the contribution sport clubs make to local communities
- to support Local Authorities in producing and implementing a sport strategy that recognises the value of sport to local communities
- to demonstrate commitment to all of the above by considering bringing forward appropriate legislation that safeguards the provision of opportunities for sport and physical activity in Scotland
Since its launch, representatives of all the political parties have had discussions with the Scottish Sports Alliance, the collective voice of the Scottish Sports Association, Scottish Universities Sport and Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils.
