Purple Thistle, Oban, Aug 23/24
215 people have entered so far. What is surprising is the number of entries from outside Scotland and the noticeable absence of a lot of regular SOL participants.
Perhaps they haven’t realized that there is an opportunity to orienteer on 2 high quality areas in one weekend. Creag Mhic already has a reputation and I’m sure that Kerrera will have one after this weekend.
This also promises to be a great social weekend, with a commercial campsite being the base for the event. So help out your fellow orienteers and pass the word.
The island of Kerrera and the classic Creag Mhic Chailein are the locations for this year. Information is now available from the Purple Thistle website.
Online entries now open at oentries.com.
From the Purple Thistle website:
“This year we are heading to the west coast where we have teamed up with our good friends, Lock Eck Orienteers, to provide another weekend of Barebones orienteering.
We will take you to two quality areas within easy reach of the accommodation. One of which, Kerrera, is brand new, mapped especially for the event and located on an island within walking distance (via a boat) from our accomodation! Kerrera will offer a wonderful physical and technical challenge, not to mention the best views you’ll find whilst orienteering this year (provided the weather is nice!). The other area is an old favourite, Creag Mhic Chailein, which will, as always, provide delightfully tough orienteering. There will be five courses available each day, ranging from the ‘Baby Thistle’ which is suitable for beginners, to the technically and physically demanding ‘Mighty Thistle’ which will provide a classic orienteering test.
As if all that isn’t enough, we also plan to throw something else into the mix, a Saturday evening special sprint in Oban.”
