Orienteering is something everyone should try
It’s probably a sign of advancing age when you are invited to become Patron of a national organisation. My own competitive sporting achievements took place some forty-odd years ago so I was thrilled to be asked to become a Patron of Scottish Orienteering.

Although my own orienteering experience is pretty minimal, the sport is an interesting blend of cross country running and navigation with a map and compass. It was the navigation angle that really caught my interest. A number of years ago I found myself in a situation that could have had life and death implications, and if it wasn't for the fact I had become fairly handy with a map and compass I might not have been here to tell the tale.
