Moray & Highland Junior Champs 2016
Roseisle, April 17
The champs have been a joint initiative between Moravian and INVOC since 2010. 135 juniors were among a starting line up of close to 300 orienteers at Moravian's Level C event at Roseisle. All results here.
While Moravian led with the organization and planning, INVOC provided members to help on the day and helped to run a joint promotional campaign which was funded by the Berry Burn Community Trust, a local renewable energy company that supports local community enterprises. Berry Burn also funded the trophies with the £270 grant.
Juniors run in Under 11, Under 13, 15, 17 age categories which were planned at the "B" standard used in normal orienteering age classes. This means that the event is suitable for the many youngsters in both clubs' areas who have tried orienteering at school but are new to mainstream club events. Experienced club juniors can "run up" a class so they get more of a challenge. Special "select" classes are provided for boys and girls who are running at light green standard or above.
While most of the 30 medals went to club members, it was encouraging to see unattached runners getting in among the prizes claiming 5 medals. The hope is that more new members will be attracted in to the sport when they realize they're good at it, and that club juniors will be kept on the toes knowing that there's plenty competition out there!
Chris Spencer, by now fully recovered from his ordeal in the Yorkshire hail storms at the JK, was there to capture the action on the all-seeing ActivNorth camera and his photo gallery can he seen here. Some terrific shots you will surely agree!
