Grampian Orienteering Club - 2010 British Orienteering Club of the Year
Grampian Orienteering Club has been awarded British Orienteering Club of the Year for 2010. This is due in no small part to Anne Hickling’s hard work who received a British Orienteering Service Award for her efforts.
Janet Clark of Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club also picked up a British Orienteering Service Award for her outstanding work in development and expansion of orienteering in and around Edinburgh.
Pete Lawrence, the Grampian Orienteering Club Chairman had this to say: “We were very surprised and enormously pleased to find out we have been granted this award. I think it’s in recognition of the sustained efforts by club members, lead until the New Year by Anne Hickling, in steadily increasing participation and membership by putting on many small, friendly and well run events in and around Aberdeen. Last year we put on over 50 events of different forms as well as a weekly fitness training session.
We also have to give thanks the Corporate Decathlon company, Activity Mix for including orienteering in last year’s competition. The club laid on special training for competitors and welcomed them to our very successful Wednesday evening Summer Series where we broke the 100 competitor barrier more than once.
GRAMP members are now turning attention to schools orienteering with the hope that we can create some regional rivalry with MAROC who have been hugely successful in this in recent years. I feel there is a real momentum building in the northeast, which I hope we can sustain.”
On behalf of the SOA congratulations to both Anne, Janet and the Grampian Orienteers.
