Orienteering Centre Of Excellence Launches In Edinburgh

A dedicated Orienteering Centre of Excellence is set to be launched in Edinburgh next month.

The Brititsh hub, the only one in Scotland, will be led by well-known Finnish orienteer Toni Louhisola, who has been appointed as the full-time Head of Performance.

Secured through a multi-partnership arrangement with British Orienteering, Scottish Orienteering the University of Edinburgh and national sports scholarship scheme Winning Students, the Centre of Excellence will further develop the talent in Scotland.

Winning Students is now in its second year, supporting the best athletes studying in colleges and universities across Scotland with scholarships of up to £5,500 through funding from the Scottish Funding Council.

Led by the University of Stirling as Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence, student athletes benefit from an individually tailored support package which includes amongst others, coaching, physiotherapy, travel expenses and accommodation.

Orienteering is one of nine Winning Students core sports and in 2008/09, 10 of the country’s top orienteers received support, such as Scott Fraser, a 23-year-old Performance Psychology masters student, who won the UK Elite League and was part of the Great Britain relay team which finished 9th in the 2009 World Championships.

It is anticipated 11 orienteers will receive Winning Students scholarships for 2010/11, with an announcement expected in January.

On his appointment Head of Performance Toni Louhisola said “I proudly take on this challenge and the daily work towards our future goals. We want to bring to the Centre of Excellence in Edinburgh a positive, innovative and supportive culture, where every athlete feels respected and can enjoy the atmosphere and a variety of high quality trainings. My goal is to make the team work together, to develop the individuals and to help them produce the results they dream about.”

Orienteers will work with Toni from the Centre for Sport and Exercise at the University of Edinburgh.
