Following feedback from competitors during 2009, some changes have been made to the operation of the SOL scoring system. The new BOF event format and a decision to move to a new scoring system, caused some changes in the SOLs in 2009. After some initial concerns about the new system, this new system was been favourably received. Some modifications were introduced during the year in response to comments from competitors. As the impacts of the new BOF event structure continue to be debated, the format of SOLs and the ways in which we present the results have both attracted favourable comments from elsewhere in the UK. For 2010 we will:

1. (a) retain the 2009 innovation of publishing a list by course as well as one by class. Many competitors like to see this. The course-based list will be the primary list, from which lists for runners eligible for individual age classes (with L and S options where appropriate) will be generated.

(b) Scores for the White course will be included, although on a non-competitive basis.

(c) in generating age-class lists, B classes will be used for juniors (up to M/W 18 only) who are running one course lower than the corresponding A class.

2. One of the main areas for discussion has been the shadowing of junior beginners. SOL organisers are requested to ask White/Yellow runners and parents if they are being shadowed or not when maps are uplifted (start officials may also note if runners are being shadowed, but we are reluctant to impose an extra duty on small start teams). Please can parents remember to declare when they are shadowing, in the interests of fair play to all. The following message will be on the SOA web site, and can be displayed at registration:

Juniors who are being shadowed should be declared non-competitive, in the interests of fairness to all young beginners. We rely on parental honesty in policing this - please inform people at Registration if you will be shadowing your child. They will still get SOL points, but will be non-competitive for the purpose of the SOL league tables. Shadowing is defined as a parent, or other shadower, being on the course at the same time as the junior no matter how much or how little actual help is provided.

3. For runners who run up to a harder course, we will move to the same system as BOF rankings - runners running up will be listed against the next class up, rather than the highest possible class as used in 2009.

4. The scoring system is complex, but is fair and has the advantage of keeping competition going to the final race. If the new BOF ranking system proves effective, we may be able to simply use BOF ranking points in future but will see how this system works in 2010 before deciding on this.
