SEDS winter training

SEDS Winter training

Winter training is well under way for Scotland’s elite orienteers. For most, this consists of long runs, strength work and of course, time in orienteering terrain. Although orienteering is predominantly an individual sport, training with others can help raise your game and give you inspiration to get through a cold, dark winter!

At the weekend a select few were up in Speyside for some team training. Fast and furious trains in Ellan Wood got us warmed up on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, we headed to Achlean, similar terrain to that of some of the areas embargoed for WOC 2015. A quality course was planned with a control pick through the more technical part and for the girls, a map memory section in the less detailed area.

On Sunday, we woke up to a glorious day for late November and decided on a long mountain run. Starting from the ski centre, we ran up Cairn Gorm and then the boys headed off to do some other peaks, whilst us girls ran round the ridge to Ben Macdui, before turning round and heading back down the hill.

SEDS training weekends are generally open to all and provide top-quality training around Scotland and beyond. They are aimed at both elite athletes aiming for international representation and developing athletes with potential.
