SEDS weekend 28/29th Jan

Dumyat

Saturday morning, and SEDS athletes along with some winning students and other guest athletes converged centrally on Stirling for a weekend of no frills, focus on the orienteering technique training weekend.

We started at Sauchie and Polmaise with compass and route choice exercises. This was ably planned and hung by Marcus Pinker and Jason Inman who followed this with a den building exercise for wee Matthew Inman! The morning ended with an exciting downhill head to head control pick.

After refuelling at Sainsbury’s we headed up to Dumyat for a focus on map contact with a line course and contour exercise, though it was easy to be distracted by the beautiful views. As dark was falling we had a head to head clock relay around the top of the hill. The competition was strong in the men’s with SEDS athletes, winning students and WOC athletes in the mix however the men’s clear winner was Will Hensman (FVO). In the girls race it was much closer with Helen Bridle, Linnea Gustafsson (2011 Sprint World Champion) and Jess Halliday finishing very close.

Sunday dawned not so bright and sunny but we still headed up to the Trossachs where we split into two groups. Some people battled the mighty M21E World Cup course from 1988, won in 2 hours at the time. The other group, mostly the girls plus Jason and Roger Goddard from FVO, ran up Bein A'an into the snow. They then took on part of the world cup course for a couple of head to head legs and plenty of talk-o.

A generous 5 hours of training over the weekend later, feeling tired and pretty bruised in most cases, we headed home. And that is how a training weekend should be done train hard and in between lots of food and chat!
