Scots Elites show strength in Cumbria

SEDS got their 2010 program off to a flying start this weekend with a trip to Cumbria and the Lake District for some racing and training.

Scott Fraser got the weekend off to a great start with a relatively comfortable win over Oli Johnson in the Carlisle Urban race, while Oleg Chepelin made it onto the podium in 3rd place. In the Womens race junior Kirstin Maxwell showed she can mix it up with the top seniors with an impressive 3rd place, less than a minute behind winner Karen Poole. Following the street race the squad made their way to High Rigg near Keswick for some training more relevant to the key races in the upcoming season and then some well earned rest and recuperation in Kendal Youth Hostel.

On Sunday there was another impressive showing by Oleg in the Tim Watkins Trophy - the mass start long distance race inspired by the infamous Blodslitet race in Norway.  Oleg took second place, only 12 seconds behind Oli Johnson of SYO, showing that Olegs winter training has paid off and he is well placed for a great season this spring.

Elsewhere this weekend there were strong runs for Hector Haines, Duncan Coombs and Tom Ryan in the British University Cross Country championships at Stirling University, where they finished 70th, 80th and 100th respectively - all highly creditable positions.

The SEDS athletes will continue their own training for the next few weeks before regrouping for a squad weekend in Deeside at the end of the month.
