Orienteering is something everyone should try
It’s probably a sign of advancing age when you are invited to become Patron of a national organisation. My own competitive sporting achievements took place some forty-odd years ago so I was thrilled to be asked to become a Patron of Scottish Orienteering.

A recent publication from Glasgow City Council gives sports clubs advice on how to take advantage of the expected surge in interest in sport during and after the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The lessons are of course highly relevant to orienteering clubs and WOC 2015, so we have produced a simpler document to meet this specific aim.

The WOC 2015 event team would like to appoint someone to the role of Squad Training Co-ordinator. The main role of the Squad Training Co-ordinator is to organise training opportunities for national squads in the build-up to WOC 2015. Although this is a voluntary role, an honorarium might be payable.

How many times have those of us who suffer from colour blindness stared at our map after the race and said “If only …..”: a different overprint had been used, a control number shifted a little bit onto a different background, the dark green on the map not quite so dark, etc

Extensive LiDAR data is now available under a licence agreement between Scottish Water, Scottish Ministers, the Scottish Ministers and SEPA and sportscotland and a licence agreement between sportscotland and the Scottish Orienteering Association.

What it means for orienteers
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is now a well-established technology capable of creating superb data for use in orienteering mapping. Lasers are fired in very rapid pulses, thousands of times a second, and essentially the processed data of millions of 3D co-ordinates can be joined up to form 3D models of the landscape.
