Types of event

Registered events are at one of six levels:

  • Local - these informal events are ideal for newcomers; they are generally quite frequent
  • District - free choice of course, usually colour-coded courses
  • Regional - courses designated by age group; intended to cater for all orienteers beyond the novice level, though often also offering courses for novices
  • National - a series of events run by clubs on behalf of their associations
  • Championship - the British Championships is the highest standard competition in Britain.  Courses designated by age group; overseen by British Orienteering’s Technical Committee.
  • International - from time to time major international events are held in the UK,; select teams represent invited nations.

In the Fixture List the first 5 of these are designated by the numbers 1 to 5 (where 5 is a Local event), eg. C3, o5.

All except Championship and International standard events are open to anyone, whether or not they are a member of an orienteering club.
Most Regional and National events offer a £2 reduction in entry fee for “National” members of British Orienteering.

Colour coded courses follow standards as closely as possible.
Age classes are determined by your age at 31st December of the current year
