This monitoring report is to assess the impact of orienteering on the Sands of Forvie National Nature Reserve.
It is aimed at recording any damage to vegetation during an orienteering event held on the Sands of Forvie NNR, and if any damage caused, the rate of recovery.

Over the last two decades, the magnificent capercaillie has declined rapidly throughout Scotland. A national survey during the winter of 1998 produced an estimate of approximately 1100 birds – half the number found in the previous survey five years earlier! If the decline continues at this rate, the species could be extinct within ten years. This is an astonishing prospect, given that the Scottish population was estimated to have been in the region of 20,000 birds during the 1970s. It is now thought that fewer than 1000 birds remain in Scotland.

Scottish Natural Heritage are organising an Outdoor Access Festival from the 28th April to the 7th May 2007. All outdoor activities registered with SNH by the 10th January 2007 will receive free nation-wide publicity. In return for registering their event with SNH, all organisers will receive publicity material advertising access rights and responsibilities to hand out to all participants.
