Capercaillie, RSPB article

Over the last two decades, the magnificent capercaillie has declined rapidly throughout Scotland. A national survey during the winter of 1998 produced an estimate of approximately 1100 birds – half the number found in the previous survey five years earlier! If the decline continues at this rate, the species could be extinct within ten years. This is an astonishing prospect, given that the Scottish population was estimated to have been in the region of 20,000 birds during the 1970s. It is now thought that fewer than 1000 birds remain in Scotland.

Scotland win SHIs

After success at the relays on Saturday at Dalnamein, Scotland went on to win the individuals at Craig a Barns as well. Results here.

FVO win the Compass Sport Cup

Forth Valley Orienteers came out winners at the Compass Sport Trophy final at Sutton Park to retain the title.

European Junior Championships, Switzerland

Over the weekend of 10-12 October 2008 Doug Tullie (EUOC & RR), Hollie Orr (EUOC & Clyde) , Hazel Wright (EUOC & Maroc), Jamie Stevenson (FVO), Kirsty Coombs (Maroc) and Abi Longhurst (FVO) represented Great Britain at the European Youth Championships and European Cup Junior Match.

Help Needed - Trophies and Certificates Coordinator

SOA are looking for a volunteer to manage the SOA Trophies and Certificates.  These include the Scottish Orienteering Championship Individual and Relays,  the 11-person Relay, Night, Sprint and Score Championship awards.

The role will include keeping a track of the whereabouts of the Trophies and instigating a rolling programme to restore/upgrade/replace trophies as appropriate over the next few years.
